Year 11 History

Course Description

This course can be taken as a full year option (12-16 credits) OR as a Semester option (Semester 1: 8 credits, Semester 2: 8 credits). All History credits count for Level 1 Literacy.

Who is this subject intended for:
This course is for students who are interested in the past. History connects students with the wider world as they develop their own identities and sense of place. As a subject it invites them to ask, and helps them to answer, today’s questions by engaging with the past. This is an NCEA academic course that offers up to 24 credits.

What you will learn in this subject:
History is a research-based subject where the skills of inquiry will be fully developed. You will be able to interpret and understand a wide range of resources and to communicate effectively in different ways. The course should help you to become confident around questioning as well as to develop empathy for others.
New Zealand has experienced a number of disasters in the 20th Century such as the Influenza Pandemic 1918 and Ballantynes fire 1947. You will investigate the causes and effects of events such as these as well as focus on race relations in the U.S.A and New Zealand. These will help you to understand local, national and global histories.

Where this subject will lead:
This course will set you up for study at higher levels in History. You will gain credits towards your NCEA Level 1 certificate as well as attaining Literacy credits. You will also see that the subject supports a wide number of career paths especially those that use research skills, for example, administration, armed forces, civil service, heritage industry, human resources, journalism, local government, media, politics, teaching and so on.

Recommended Prior Learning

What you need to be able to do and know to achieve in this subject: A person who is well organised and who can manage their time and resources effectively will be able to cope better with this course. If you have sound reading and writing skills you will find History is a subject you should do well in. Most of all, if you have a keen interest in the past and in current events, you should be able to succeed to a high level.
